Community Services Worker

Recent national and provincial government studies predict increasing shortages of Social Service workers as those now employed reach retirement age. To meet this need, Herzing College has launched a one year ‘Community Services Worker’ diploma program, which includes a two-month internship of work placement.

This program also includes the following certificates:

  • First Aid & CPR
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention

Presently, the GTA is experiencing a shortage of personnel able to work with special populations that require assistance such as: seniors, unemployed, mentally ill, children and youth, disadvantaged women and other minority groups.

Through means of an extensive survey of more than 100 Community Service employers, Herzing College learned that over 70% responded that the need for Community Service workers would increase over the next 5 to 10 years. The majority of employers surveyed noted they would consider hiring a Herzing College Graduate for an internship or full time employment.

The surveyed employers also indicated individuals looking to pursue a career in the Community Service field would need to possess the following social skills:

  • a grasp of addictions and how to cope with them
  • a sense of responsibility
  • ethics
  • a familiarity with working alone and independently.

The Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS) reported that unemployment in the Community and Social Service sector is at 3% below the national average of 5%. Studies show employment for Community and Social Service workers is expected to grow at an annual rate of 1.8% or about as fast as the average for other occupations.

Employers in the field report a lack of workers who have completed post-secondary education as well as a need for more male employees in a field that is predominantly female.

Community and Social Service workers implement a variety of social assistance programs. They continue to assist clients in many ways with personal and social problems. They are employed by government agencies, mental health agencies, group homes, school boards, correctional facilities and other establishments.

Herzing College is offering both morning and afternoon.
